Special to Classical Voice of New England:
The founding members of the Borromeo String Quartet, Nicholas Kitchen, violin, and Yeesun Kim, cello, will join with the Ensemble 212 Orchestra in New York City on September 18th to present the World Premiere of Mohammed Fairouz’s double concerto for violin, cello, and orchestra, entitled “States of Fantasy”. Fairouz?s Symphony No. 2 will also receive its New York premiere on that night.
Nicholas Kitchen and Yeesun Kim are on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Borromeo String Quartet is Quartet-in-Residence at NEC. Ensemble 212 is an exciting New York-based orchestra comprised of young professionals, founded in 2004 by conductor Yoon Jae Lee. The orchestra performs a diverse repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to the present featuring chamber music, ensemble, and orchestra concerts.
Mohammed Fairouz, Ensemble 212’s Composer-in-Residence, composed “States of Fantasy” especially for Nicholas Kitchen and Yeesun Kim. Mr. Fairouz was inspired to create “States of Fantasy” from the book by Jacqueline Rose of the same name. There will be a lecture/demonstration of the process of composing and its relationship to the book on Friday, September 17th at Columbia University, in 301 Philosophy Hall at 6:30. This lecture is free and open to the public. Nicholas and Yeesun will play the two elegies from the concerto on this program.
Later on this fall, the Borromeo will release a new CD with the “Lamentation and Satire” by Fairouz, the 4th string quartet by Gunther Schuller, uniquely recorded in two forms - a live performance and an edited one - and the Bartok 4th String Quartet. The disc will be produced under the “Living Archive” label.
